The Interpretation Centre for Fisheries of Ametlla de Mar is a multipurpose hall where exhibitions are held as well as various activities related to the maritime-fishing and marine culture. L'Ametlla is the daughter of the sea. The origins of the town date back to the eighteenth century when it belonged to the town of Perelló. Until the early nineteenth century the fishing was centred on the nature harbour Estany. Ametlla grew significantly throughout the century. The town separated from Perelló in 1891 and started the twentieth century with 2,500 habitants. The backbone of the socioeconomic development of the town and has always been fishing. In the year 1920 the dock and the fish market was built. After a bitter civil war and years of dictatorship, little by little, the fishing fleet grew to become one of the most important of Catalonia. Currently, Ametlla de Mar has trawlers, trammel nets, seines and tuna. As regards bluefin tuna, Ametlla has a business network dedicated to fishing, farming and domestic and international marketing. Today, the two economic engines of the town are tourism and fishing. Through the Fishing Interpretation Centre converted from the old fish market these two industries are enhanced while working for the commitment to environmental preservation and recovery of history and traditions.
